Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago confirmed that FDC ironman Dr Kizza Besigye has been arrested at Entebbe Airport. Besigye was aboard Kenya Airways.
“As soon as he arrived, Besigye was arrested by police,” Lukwago told journalists at Entebbe International Airport on Monday morning.
“We don’t know where he has been taken. But police drove away with him,” Lukwago, an opposition member, added.
“Mubarak Munyagwa, Allan Sewanyana and I were denied access to VIP Lounge and ongoing to ordinary lounge we were told by some passengers who were aboard the plane that Besigye was arrested as soon as the plane landed.”
Besigye was today expected to address the media at the airport after which he would drive in a convoy to Kampala.
However, police and military forces put in place roadblocks along the highway.
At Kitubulu, there was a joint road block where all vehicles were subjected to checks and occupants ordered out.
Meanwhile, in trading centres like Abayita Ababiri there was more heavy security deployment, Chimpreports reports.
At the checkpoint to the airport, only passengers with passports and visas were allowed. No journalist could be allowed to access the airport with CAA officials, saying we had to get clearance from Uganda Communications Commission.
Police maintains FDC did not cooperate fully with the law enforcement body on the preparations for Besigye’s return.
