Egypt: Flood’s death toll rises to 26

At least 26 people have died and 72 others injured after 48 hours of torrential rain and subsequent flood since Thursday in Egypt.

Egyptian state news agency MENA reported the death toll on Saturday citing the health and population ministry.

“In South Sinai, nine people were killed and one injured. In Upper Egypt’s Sohag eight people were killed and 23 injured, while in Beni Suef five people were injured. In the Red Sea, nine people were killed and 35 others injured,” Egyptian news portal Ahram Online reported.

The Ministry of Health spokesman, Khaled Megahed, said the death toll could rise as some families did not report deaths before burial.

The government ordered a total of EGP 50 million ($5.6 million) to be allocated as compensation to the victims of the floods nationwide, and another EGP 50 million for the restoration of infrastructure in affected areas.
