Rusizi: Two arrested for bribing officers

Police in Rusizi district has arrested two men in connection with attempting to bribe traffic police officers. The suspects arrested on November 10, were identified as Pantanleon Nirere and Mathieu Hategekimana.

They were arrested as they tried to bribe officers who were supervising motorcycle driving tests.  Nirere attempted to bribe the officer with Rwf 30,000 while Hategekimana tried giving an officer Rwf 50,000

Narating circumstances that led to the arrest of the two, the District Police Commander (DPC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Christian Safari, said the two had failed the driving tests but wanted to be included on the list of those that passed the tests.

He went on to add that the two who are in police custody, at Kamembe Police Station, had no reason whatsoever to give a bribe and that they could have waited for a second available opportunity.

‘It’s improper for the public to bribe their way to get these permits; tests are conducted twice a month if you fail one can come again’ said the DPC.

He also asked members of the public who are dissatisfied with any police service to complain through the relevant channels for possible redress.

‘’The public should know that Rwanda National Police is zero tolerant to corruption and certainly traffic police cannot condone bribes,” he emphasised.

If convicted, bribery could fetch a jail sentence of two to five years in prison and a fine of two to ten times the moneys involved in the bribe, according to article 640 of the Rwanda penal code.
